For Patients and Families

Understanding Leukemia. Exploring New Treatment Possibilities.

A diagnosis of leukemia can be overwhelming for patients and their families.

At BioCytara, we recognize the importance of providing clear, reliable information about hematological cancers, treatment approaches, and ongoing medical research.

Our mission is to support the development of innovative therapies that may help address the needs of patients with limited treatment options.

Understanding Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)

AML is a type of blood and bone marrow cancer that affects the normal production of blood cells.

The disease develops when abnormal immature blood cells multiply rapidly in the bone marrow, interfering with the production of healthy red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

AML can develop at any age but is more common in older adults.

How Is AML Treated?

Treatment depends on several factors, including the patient’s age, general medical condition, genetic characteristics of the leukemia, and previous treatments.

Available treatment approaches may include chemotherapy, targeted therapies, combinations of different medications, and stem cell transplantation.

Some patients can receive intensive chemotherapy, while others may require less intensive treatment because of age, accompanying medical conditions, or other factors.

The selection of treatment should always be made together with a qualified hematologist.

Understanding Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS)

MDS refers to a group of diseases in which the bone marrow does not produce enough healthy blood cells.

Patients may experience anemia, fatigue, infections, or increased bleeding.

Some forms of MDS carry a significant risk of developing into AML.

Treatment depends on disease severity, genetic characteristics, blood counts, and the patient’s overall condition.

What Is Aspacytarabine?

Aspacytarabine (BST-236) is an investigational cancer therapy being developed for patients with AML and potentially other blood cancers.

It is based on cytarabine, a chemotherapy drug that has been used in leukemia treatment for many years.

Aspacytarabine was designed to deliver cytarabine differently, with the objective of reducing treatment-limiting toxicities while preserving high anticancer activity.

Clinical studies have shown promising results, including complete remissions in some patients who were considered unsuitable for standard intensive chemotherapy.

However, Aspacytarabine remains investigational. Its benefits and risks have not yet been fully established.

What Does Complete Remission Mean?

In AML, complete remission (CR) generally means that leukemia cells have been reduced below a defined level in the bone marrow and that certain blood cell counts have recovered.

Achieving complete remission is an important treatment objective.

However, complete remission does not necessarily mean that leukemia has been permanently cured.

Patients may require additional treatment and continued medical monitoring.

Clinical Trials: Why They Matter

Clinical trials are essential for evaluating the safety and effectiveness of potential new medicines.

They allow researchers to determine whether a treatment may benefit patients and identify possible risks.

Participation in a clinical trial is voluntary and subject to specific eligibility requirements.

Patients considering participation should discuss the potential benefits, risks, alternatives, and available studies with their treating physician.

Can I Receive Aspacytarabine?

Aspacytarabine is not currently approved as a marketed treatment.

Access may be possible only through an appropriately authorized clinical study or another legally permitted investigational-access mechanism, if available.

Patients interested in Aspacytarabine should consult their hematologist and review current clinical trial information.

Clinical trial registration information is available through ClinicalTrials.gov.

Our Commitment to Patients

BioCytara’s long-term objective is to contribute to the development of treatments that expand therapeutic possibilities for patients with leukemia.

We believe that patients deserve continued innovation, scientifically supported treatment options, and clear information about emerging therapies.

Every patient matters. Every treatment advance matters.
